The two most popular DIY mid-drive motors ever made. One has a torque sensor, one has more power. Which is right for your build?

If you're shopping for a mid-drive conversion kit, you're almost certainly choosing between the Tongsheng TSDZ2 and the BAFANG BBS02. These are the two most-installed DIY mid-drive motors in history, with combined sales in the millions. Both are excellent โ€” but they represent fundamentally different design philosophies.

The TSDZ2 optimizes for ride quality. Its true torque sensor delivers smooth, proportional power that feels like having bionic legs. The BBS02 optimizes for raw power and customization. Its cadence sensor delivers more peak wattage, and its firmware is fully user-programmable. There's no wrong choice โ€” but there is a right choice for your riding style.

The Verdict

The deciding factor is the sensor. If you've never ridden a torque-sensor e-bike, find a local shop and test ride one โ€” the difference is immediately obvious. If you value smooth, natural ride feel above all else, the TSDZ2 wins. If you value maximum power, customization, and community support, the BBS02 wins.

Choose TSDZ2 if you: are coming from regular cycling and want your e-bike to feel like cycling, ride in groups with non-electric bikes, value smooth power delivery, want a lighter motor, or ride technical terrain where precise power modulation matters.

Choose BBS02 if you: want maximum power for hills or cargo, plan to modify firmware, value the largest community knowledge base, want 52V compatibility, or prioritize lowest price per watt.

For 2026, we slightly prefer the TSDZ2 for most riders โ€” the torque sensor advantage is more meaningful in daily riding than the BBS02's extra peak power. But for power-hungry riders, the BBS02 remains the gold standard.
