WattCycle is an independent review site focused exclusively on e-bike conversion kits. We don't take manufacturer money. We tell you what's actually worth buying.

WattCycle was founded in 2026 to fill a gap in the e-bike media landscape: there was no dedicated, authoritative review hub for DIY e-bike conversion kits. General tech sites covered individual kits as one-off posts, YouTube reviewers focused on hands-on impressions of single products, and manufacturer marketing materials filled the void with inflated specs and selective claims.

We set out to do something different: build a comprehensive, independent, technically rigorous resource for anyone considering converting a bike to electric. Every kit we feature is independently verified against manufacturer spec sheets, real Amazon buyer reviews, and our own evaluation rubric. We never accept payment from manufacturers for placement, positive reviews, or featured positioning.

Our team has been riding, building, and writing about e-bikes since the early days of the BAFANG BBS02 in 2014. We've personally installed dozens of motors, ridden thousands of miles on converted bikes, and helped hundreds of first-time converters through the process. The recommendations on this site are the recommendations we'd give to a friend.

Our Testing Methodology

Every product featured on WattCycle is evaluated using a consistent, documented rubric. Here's exactly how we score and rank kits:

  1. Verified Amazon availability (Pass/Fail): The product must be currently in stock on Amazon US with a stable ASIN and at least 100 verified buyer reviews. We re-verify availability every 30 days.
  1. Buyer review volume and rating (25%): We weight products with 100+ reviews and 4.0+ average rating more heavily. Products with patterns of safety complaints or consistent failures are automatically disqualified.
  1. Spec-to-price ratio (25%): We compare wattage, torque, included components, and build quality to the price. Products that offer significantly more value per dollar score higher.
  1. Brand reputation and warranty (20%): Established brands with documented warranty support (BAFANG, Tongsheng, Voilamart) score higher than generic no-name brands. Minimum acceptable warranty: 6 months.
  1. Use-case fit (15%): Products are matched to specific use cases (commuting, hills, cargo, off-road, etc.). A product that excels in one category scores higher than a jack-of-all-trades.
  1. Safety certifications (10%): We prioritize products with CE certification, UL listing, or equivalent safety marks. Products with documented safety issues (recalls, class-action litigation) are automatically disqualified.
  1. Editorial experience (5%): Where we have hands-on experience with a product, we factor that into our assessment. We disclose when our evaluation is based purely on spec-sheet analysis rather than hands-on testing.

Products must score at least 7.5/10 to be featured in our 'best' guides. We re-evaluate every product quarterly and remove any kit that develops a pattern of safety complaints or significant quality declines.

Our Editorial Standards

WattCycle adheres to the following editorial standards:

Independence: We never accept payment from manufacturers for placement, positive reviews, or featured positioning. Our reviews are our honest assessment based on the rubric above.

Transparency: When we recommend a product, we link to its Amazon listing using our affiliate link. If you buy through that link, we earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. This is how we fund the site.

Accuracy: We verify every spec, every price, and every product availability claim against live Amazon data. If a product's price or availability changes materially, we update our content within 30 days.

Disclosure: We clearly disclose our affiliate relationship in the site footer and on every review page. We never present affiliate links as anything other than what they are.

Honesty: When a product has drawbacks, we say so. When a product isn't worth buying, we say so. When we don't have hands-on experience with a product, we say so. Trust is hard to build and easy to lose.

Corrections: If we publish incorrect information, we correct it promptly and transparently. Contact us with any factual errors and we'll investigate immediately.
