Two legendary high-power mid-drives compared. The BBSHD is the proven workhorse; the CYC Photon is the lightweight challenger. Which wins?

If you're shopping for a 1000W+ mid-drive conversion in 2026, you're choosing between the BAFANG BBSHD (proven reliability, deep community) and the CYC Photon (lighter, more refined, but newer). Both are excellent motors for high-power builds, but they make different trade-offs.

This comparison covers every meaningful difference to help you choose the right one for your build. Note: CYC Photon is available direct from CYC Motor or via Electrify Bike (US distributor). BAFANG BBSHD is widely available on Amazon.

The Verdict

These motors optimize for different things. The BBSHD is a tank — heavier, more powerful, with massive parts availability and a 10-year track record. The CYC Photon is a featherweight — half the weight of the BBSHD with nearly as much power, but at 2x the price and with limited parts availability.

Choose BBSHD if you: (1) need maximum peak torque (160 N·m vs 130 N·m), (2) are converting a cargo bike or tandem, (3) want the largest possible parts ecosystem, (4) are budget-conscious, or (5) ride in extreme conditions where reliability is paramount.

Choose CYC Photon if you: (1) care about weight (saves 1.9kg vs BBSHD), (2) want a quieter motor, (3) have a road bike or light hardtail where BBSHD weight would ruin handling, (4) don't mind the higher price, or (5) value the modern design and active cooling.

For 90% of high-power builds, the BBSHD is the right choice — proven reliability and deep parts availability win over the CYC's weight savings. But for weight-conscious riders who can afford the premium, the CYC Photon is a remarkable motor.
