BBS02 and BBS02B are nearly identical motors, but the B revision has important updates. Here's how to tell them apart and which to buy.

If you're shopping for a BAFANG BBS02, you may notice some listings say 'BBS02' and others say 'BBS02B.' The difference is a hardware revision BAFANG made around 2018-2019. The BBS02B is the updated version with several improvements over the original BBS02.

This guide explains the differences, helps you identify which version you have or are buying, and recommends which to choose for your build. The short answer: the BBS02B is the better motor, but the original BBS02 is still excellent and often cheaper.

The Verdict

The BBS02B is the better motor — it has improved thermal management, better 52V compatibility, more durable nylon gear, and updated connectors. If you're buying new, get the BBS02B.

However, the original BBS02 is still an excellent motor. If you find a good deal on a used original BBS02, don't hesitate — it's still one of the most reliable DIY e-bike motors ever made. Millions of original BBS02 motors are still in service after 10+ years.

How to tell which you have: Look at the motor label. The BBS02B will have 'BBS02B' printed on it. The original just says 'BBS02.' Also, the BBS02B has slightly different connector shapes.

If you're running 52V, definitely get the BBS02B. The original BBS02 can fail on 52V — the controller wasn't designed for it. The BBS02B handles 52V natively.

Bottom line: buy the BBS02B if buying new. Don't worry if you have the original BBS02 — it's still excellent. Avoid 52V on the original BBS02.
